Web Culture and Philosophy

Page history last edited by Richard Hall 2 years, 8 months ago
  1. Watch the video "The Machine is Us/ing Us" by Michael Wesh. Then watch his speech at the Library of Congress about the web. Post to the class discussion board and address the following in your post:
    1. The machine is us/ing us, suggests that the web transforms our thinking on many important things (copyright, authorship, identity, ethics, aesthetics, rhetorics, privacy, government, commerce, love, family, and ourselves). Do you belive this is true? Has it already happened?
    2. Comment on the statement that  "sometimes that distance allows us to connect more deeply than ever" with respect to youtube, and relate this to your own experience with youtube or similar web applications. (Even if your only experience was seeing the videos assigned for class).
  2. Read my blog post "Clue Train Manifesto" and then follow the link to the 95 theses and read.

Post on the class discssion board, and address the following:

    1. Summarize the 95 theses in your own words.
    2. Has the web really transformed the relationship between business and consumers in the way suggested in the manifesto? Why are why not? Examples?
  3. Blog Exercise
    1. Create a blog using the free software "blogger". (If you don't want your blog to be public, you need to set it up so that that only those in your blog group and I can read it. This video explains how to set permissions.) (Click on "blog group" in blackboard to find out who is in your blog group.)
    2. Create a post on your blog which includes the following:
      1. Describe how you use the web in your daily life (activites, applications, sites etc.)
      2. Do you, in general, think the web is a good or bad thing in terms of its effect on people and society? Why or why not? How does this relate to your own experience?
    3. Post the url for your blog on the class discussion board (list your name and the blog address).
